Tower Pulls Drinking Water Out of Thin Air:
This water tower is one of the most significant and practical discoveries in many years.
Designer Arturo Vittori says his invention can provide remote villages with more than 25 gallons per tower of clean drinking water per day where water of any kind in nonexistent.
It is estimated that people in desolate areas like Ethiopia spend about 40 billion hours a year trying to find and collect water. If and when they do find it, the water is often not safe for human consumption, finding infectious bacteria, contaminated with animal waste or other harmful substances.
The invention made by Arturo Vittori and his colleague Andreas Vogler is not a highly sophisticated, complex piece of engineering or magic, they just used good old science.
The structure of the 30-foot-tall, vase-shaped tower has a lot of twists and turns in its design but they are not for aesthetic purposes, they all have a specific function.
The tower was designed to be erected without tools, cost about 500.00 to buy and is very easy to maintain.
The rigid outer housing of each tower is comprised of lightweight and elastic juncus stalks, woven in a pattern that offers stability in the face of strong wind gusts while still allowing air to flow through.
A mesh net made of nylon or polypropylene hangs inside the structure and collects droplets of dew from the air that form along the surface. As cold air condenses, the droplets roll down into a container at the bottom of the tower. The water in the container then passes through a tube that functions as a faucet, carrying the water to those waiting on the ground.
Arturo Vittori water tower will certainly save many lives and make living conditions in parched, isolate parts of the world much more livable.
Hats off to Arturo and Andreas for their very significant contribution to mankind.
More effort should be put forth by all people and countries trying to make the world a better place to live rather than spending godzillions of dollars to design the most deadly bomb that will annihilate mankind.
